Container rain occurs when warm, moisture-laden air enters a shipping container and then cools as the vessel moves into cooler waters or night-time temperatures drop. Water vapour condenses on the cold metal walls and ceiling of the container and drips onto cargo below — causing water damage, mould, label loss and product spoilage. It is most common on routes passing through tropical zones, including those from East African ports.

Container desiccants absorb moisture directly from the air inside a sealed shipping container. By reducing the relative humidity level below the dew point, they prevent water vapour from condensing on container surfaces. The desiccant absorbs moisture and stores it in a stable gel or solid form that cannot leak onto cargo, remaining effective throughout the transit period.

The number of desiccant bags required depends on the container size, cargo moisture content, transit duration and trade route. As a general guide, a standard 20ft container on a 20–30 day transit typically requires 2–4 units of StoGel® or equivalent. A 40ft container or longer transit may require 4–8 units. All three are Anderson Lid Company Ltd container desiccants but with different performance profiles. StoDri® is a standard product suited to short to medium transits of 7–30 days. StoGel® offers higher absorption capacity and is recommended for long-haul voyages of 30 days or more. ProDri® is a high-performance product for demanding humidity conditions, temperature-sensitive cargo or routes through extreme tropical environments. ® is a heavy-duty vapour barrier film that protects metal components, machinery, steel products and industrial equipment from corrosion, surface oxidation and moisture damage during maritime transit and long-term storage. It creates a sealed, moisture-resistant environment around the product, blocking salt air, humidity and airborne contaminants that cause rust and corrosion.

Dunnage bags are inflatable airbags placed in the void spaces between cargo loads inside a shipping container, truck or rail car. When inflated, they expand to fill the gap and apply gentle, even pressure against the cargo on both sides — preventing movement, shifting and impact damage during transit. They are fast to deploy, available in multiple sizes and can be reused multiple times.

Freshlock® Hermetic bags create an airtight, oxygen-free storage environment for grain, seeds and agricultural produce. By eliminating oxygen, they prevent insect respiration and breeding, inhibit mould growth and stop moisture from reaching the stored commodity — without the need for chemical fumigation. They are widely used for storing and exporting maize, beans, sorghum, coffee and other East African agricultural commodities.
